I have the 5" waveshare hdmi lcd (b) and when I try to run "xinput_calibrator" I am either told, no calibrateable device found, or cannot connect to X server. What's up with that? Any idea?

So you mean when your system boots, nothing is displayed? What's the situation there?
For your information, I found there're LCD screens specified for Banana Pi/Pro

For your inf ...

The Waveshare displays work and come with a disc that includes an image with their drivers already compiled within the kernel or whatever. However even when using their image, we are left with something like "No calibratable devices found" or "cannot connect to X server". Waveshare supports both pi and pro.
