4 8740
Do I need external power supply in order to connect a 3.5' hdd to banana pro, or can this be done only using banana?
Yes you will need a 12V PS as well...
Perhaps you may try also something like this:

Please do not advertise the Cubie HDD addon for Banana Pi/Pro without a warning. The 5V power cable that is supposed to be used with the on-board SATA power connector is inverted!

Banana Pi/Pro, Orange Pi, Cubieboard/Cubietruck and PCDuino all share the same 5V SATA power connector. But Cubies/PCDuino and the many Pis use a different Pin layout (no idea why LeMaker/SinoVoip or whoever the company behind the original Banana Pi is chose to exchange 5V/GND on the connector in the first place).

In my opinion dedicated dual voltage PSUs like this one are a good choice or any PSU for older external IDE enclosures that's lying around (they all feature 5V@2A and 12V@2A and can be used to power both 3.5" HDD and the board itself).

YES! I forgot about it...
