As many pepole I was looking to find a cheap and fast solution to build kind of NAS...
I make it with banana pi, and 1TB 2,5'' hard drive.
After samba install and configure, i start to mesure performance of my NAS.
Thats results...
Running a 100MB file write on X: twice...
Iteration 1:      4,86 MB/sec
Iteration 2:      5,43 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (W):      5,14 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Running a 100MB file read on X: twice...
Iteration 1:     16,99 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     19,74 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (R):     18,37 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Not too fast...
Just to compare i run the same test on my old NAS... (intell atom 2GB memory 2,5'' 1TB hdd)
Running a 100MB file write on Y: twice...
Iteration 1:     44,83 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     43,91 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (W):     44,37 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Running a 100MB file read on Y: twice...
Iteration 1:     33,56 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     31,89 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (R):     32,73 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Banana was running on rasbian, I hope in one day i will post one more test based on ubuntu. Hope that it will run faster.
gook work!

Yes, thanks... but performance poor...

    Awesome work!

To use NTFS had to install ntfs-3g driver, it was the main source of poor performance.
When you format the drive in EXT3 file system, performance has more than doubled during the writing... Here are performace test results.

Running warmup...
Running a 800MB file write on X: 4 times...
Iteration 1:     24,16 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     24,98 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     24,60 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     23,76 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (W):     24,37 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Running a 800MB file read on X: 4 times...
Iteration 1:     26,85 MB/sec
Iteration 2:     26,71 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     26,63 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     26,14 MB/sec
-----------------------------
Average (R):     26,58 MB/sec
-----------------------------

Could you share your work about how to set up the File Sever on forum? Just like an instructable or guid?

I have shared the core rootfs for ubuntu 13.04 and 14.04. You can enjoy with it.

Btw, s/srever/server

Thanks for the great info, can u try a usb hard drive on ntfs and ext3 speed too?

That would be interesting as it would test the performance of the USB port.
It should just max out at around 20MB/sec because thats all USB 2 has.

I will add performance test results tommorown, with exacly same disk but connected thru USB port...
