Network Ping & EMail Notification

Hey,

I'm currently trying install my BananaPro with Bananian as a home-server notification system wich sends me an email notification once a device is going offline on the network. Due to my pure inexperience regarding Linux/Programming in genereal I would be more than thankful to receive any tips & tricks on how to implement such a service. I tried Googling myself through it but I'm desperatly failing getting it to work.

I was thinking about some sort of script wich pings specific IP's on the network every minute or so & sends me an email once a device did not respond. Nothing major I'd assume.
