I also smell something burn in my new banana pi after I boot up.
something burn
And I see some component burn in the back of banana pi.
You can see the red ring I focus on.
Do you have the same problem? |

Thats D5? Thats a diode but can't find it in the data shed.

I think work perfect with 3.5 HD ussing a external power supply for 12 volts connected directly to hard drive power supply input the colors are Yellow (+12v) Black (-) the Red (+5v) & Orange (+3.3V) (optional)  |

If you have a Ultimate ATX PSU in your personal computer open the cover from chasis there you can see orange cables on SATA power connectors
I dont know the correctly functions about orange cables but in some cases have |

Not only for beginners. It's the only way to power a 3.5" drive because the SATA-Power-Connector on the Banana has only 5V.
The picture is done from the parts the thread starter has.
And yes there is orange 3.3 volt on psu cables. But HDDs are still all 12V/5V.
And hey, i don't need to open a front cover.
I have ~10 PCs.
2x DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP, ~4x Windows 8, Amiga 500, C64...
I still use a 3dfx Voodoo 1 and a Voodoo 5500...
