I can probably add in the GMAC drivers.

So, are you just checking out from https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi/tree/sunxi-next?

I would like to try bananian on latest kernel.
I can compile 3.4 fine.

Is 3.17 the same?
Do I need a new U-boot?

3.17 is very different and yes, new uboot. Check my build scripts. The whole process is already there:

Change board name in config to:
banana-next

Image boots but without network.

I can say mainline 18-rc works and sunxi next too with gmac and buold in realtek wlan, but i think only one core is in use. Lscpu show one online and one offline

I've tried burning your image from Bananapi.com multiple times without anyluck.
Red light on and that's it.

Just on a normal Banana Pi

its normal the green led wont light up, only the red and netwrok leds are on for now it is only headless and hdmi not working
